Abstract

Islam is well wisher of humanity and religion of peace. It does not compel anyone in the matters of belief and creed. In Islam fighting is only allowed against the combatants. It is not permitted to take arms against women, children and handicapped. Islam provides protection to those non-believers who have signed treaty with Muslims, to those who have taken shelter in the Muslim territory and to the protected people [Ahl-u-zimah].
During the period of Holy Prophet [p,b.u.h] treaties were made with Jews, Christians and Parsies etc. The Holy Prophet honored all the treaties made with non-believers. In these treaties surety of life, property , honor and possession of land were granted to them . All non-believers were given freedom of belief and creed. They were treated with tolerance. In judicial matters, they were equal to the Muslims. In matters of Qisas and Diyat, they were considered equal to the Muslims. In social life it was made sure that they should be respected and well treated. They were free to opt any profession. Inspite of their mal practices and offensives committed by them, the Holy Prophet often used to forgive them. As a whole, they were treated with tolerance and full protection was provided to them.
