Special emphasis has been laid in Islam, on acquiring religious edification, advancement, and dissemination of knowledge religious sciences. Acquiring of knowledge has been given the status of an obligation in Islam. This paper intends to identify and examin two overlapping concerns on religious sciences, i.e. the difference between mandatory and optional religious edification. First, it reviews the religious perspective of madatory discourses of the ‘ulama’ in acquiring religious education. Second, it examins the debates on this subject and sheds light on intellectual exchanges between religious scholars of the different schools of thought. Recommendations for are also the part of this paper.
